Escape to Hoth (Classic Star Wars, Volume Three)

Escape to Hoth (Classic Star Wars, Volume Three) by Archie Goodwin from Dark Horse

This is the final volume of reformatted newspaper comic strips from 1981-1984 describing Luke, Han, and Leia's adventures during the time between the end of Star Wars, the movie, and the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back. Their previous rebel base has been destroyed and our heroes must escape an Imperial blockade on the world of the Mon Calimari in order to establish a new base on the ice planet of Hoth. Al Williamson, best known for his work on Weird Fantasy and Flash Gordon, provided the lavish artwork.

After the initial euphoria of the Rebel Alliance's first major success -- the destruction of the dreaded Imperial battle station known as the Death Star -- the Empire began to rally. It had been staggered, but not destroyed. Even Darth Vader still lived. And he sought to avenge himself upon the still-ragtag forces of the Rebel Alliance. This is the story of how Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and the droids graduated from the triumphal reception at the conclusion of Star Wars: A New Hope to their new lives as hardbitten guerrillas fighting against the tyrannies of a still-dangerous Empire in The Empire Strikes Back.

Episode IV - A New Hope (Star Wars)

Episode IV - A New Hope (Star Wars) by Bruce Jones from Dark Horse

When George Lucas made the first Star Wars motion picture, a scene was shot wherein Han Solo met Jabba the Hutt. But as any Star Wars fan knows, Jabba didn't appear until the third film, Return of the Jedi. Lucas had hit the technological wall -- he couldn't craft Jabba the way he wanted, so he simply removed the scene from his initial, ground-breaking movie. Now, two decades later, he has taken that footage -- with a young Harrison Ford portraying a brash Han Solo -- and added Jabba to it. The result is incredible. The hair will stand up on the back of your neck, and you'll feel twenty years younger as you experience that remarkable thrill all over again. That's the same feeling you'll have as you read the all-new adaptation of Star Wars: A New Hope. Crafted completely from scratch by Bruce Jones, Eduardo Barreto, and longtime Star Wars artist Al Williamson, with a stunning cover by Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, this adaptation includes the new scenes from the Special Edition. For those who cannot wait for four monthly issues, and for the new readers who will surely come looking for this comic, we are publishing this simultaneously as a trade-paperback collection and as a four-issue, monthly comics series. Experience it again, for the very first time.

The Rebel Storm (Classic Star Wars, Volume Two)

The Rebel Storm (Classic Star Wars, Volume Two) by Archie Goodwin from Dark Horse

This is the second volume of Star Wars newspaper strips from the early 1980s reformatted for the comic book page. The stories, which take place between the end of Star Wars, the movie, and the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, feel natural instead of forced like so many of the other Star Wars spin-off books. After the events in the previous volume, Luke, Han, and Leia find their rebel base under attack. And so the search for a new home base begins.

There was no peace for the crew members of the Millennium Falcon between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back! Follow their adventures as they plunge head first into an underwater hunt that leads to a demonsquid, a treasonous and plotting Kraaken, the ferocious night beast, lost power gems, stranded Calamarians, and giant sea worms! Will the depths of the oceans spell defeat for the Rebels, or will they emerge victorious?

In Deadly Pursuit (Classic Star Wars, Volume One)

In Deadly Pursuit (Classic Star Wars, Volume One) by Archie Goodwin from Dark Horse

If you're like me, you know that all of the Star Wars stuff that keeps coming out cannot possibly measure up to the original movies. However, Classic Star Wars from Goodwin and Williamson recaptures the joy of seeing Star Wars for the first time. The book reproduces the newspaper strips published between 1981 and 1984, but instead of merely reprinting the strips, the images are arranged to be more suitable for the comic book page. The result is sometimes slow and repetitive, though that's easy to forget with the gorgeous art and fun story.

From 1981 to 1984, comic-book greats Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson turned out a popular series of Star Wars newspaper strips. Featuring the adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han in the time between the first and second movies, these strips were science-fiction adventure at its best.

Dark Horse reformatted those strips to make them work as a continuous story in a series of comic books, with Al Williamson himself redrawing and extending many panels for the new format. This book collects the first seven issues of the popular Dark Horse comic, with a new introduction from Archie Goodwin, new cover art, and never-before-seen art from the sketchbooks of Al Williamson.
